JA Middle Grades Classroom One 13The Middle Grades Program operates in public, parochial and private schools in the Southwest Connecticut area. This six to eight week program is offered to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and is taught by a business volunteer, retiree or parent.

JA volunteers are from a variety of professions and backgrounds, and most important of all, really want to be in the classroom. The volunteers serve as role models and enrich the activities with their own life experiences and business knowledge. The teacher and volunteer form a team. While the volunteer conducts the class, the teacher is present to assist when necessary and to reinforce the material during the week.

Sixth Grade — JA GLOBAL MARKETPLACE® provides practical information about the key aspects of the global economy, what makes world trade work, and how trade affects students’ daily lives.

Seventh Grade — JA ECONOMICS FOR SUCCESS® explores personal finance and students’ education and career options based on their skills, interests, and values.

Eighth Grade — JA IT’S MY FUTURE® provides practical information about preparing for the working world while still in middle school.

Sixth-Eighth Grade — JA IT’S MY BUSINESS® is an after school program that emphasizes entrepreneurship while providing a strong focus on social studies, reading, and writing skills. Students are encouraged to use critical thinking to learn entrepreneurial skills that support positive attitudes as they explore and enhance their career aspirations.

The Middle Grades Program, like all of Junior Achievement’s programs, is funded through area business contributions and private foundations and is, therefore, offered without cost to middle schools.

The program materials for each theme are packaged in a complete, self-contained kit including detailed activity plans, informative workbooks for students and everything necessary for a successful experience for students, teachers, and volunteers. Orientation is provided for volunteers. Junior Achievement of Southwest Connecticut provides continual support and assistance to both teachers and volunteers throughout the duration of the program.
