√ Work with your volunteer to make the program a success.
√ Help your volunteer appreciate your students as well as you do.
√ Your experience in the classroom and with your students is invaluable.
√ Be supportive – most volunteers may be nervous.
√ Create activities that link your volunteer’s work to your lesson plans.
√ Inform your students of their volunteer’s weekly visit.
√ Organize students into groups or partners when required for an activity.
√ Help involve all of your students during the activities.
√ Assist your volunteer in clarifying difficult concepts and ideas.
√ Inform your volunteer of the procedure for field trips and bringing in snacks.
√ Inform your volunteer of school holidays, class trips and changes in the school schedule which coincide with your volunteer’s classroom visits.
√ Create an atmosphere conducive to learning.
√ Go over classroom rules and procedures (quiet down signal may use with the students) with your volunteer.
√ Thanking your volunteer for his or her commitment to your students goes a long way!
√ Have students sign one large thank you card or have them create individual cards or letters.
